The Penitent moved out of the darkness and turned her vast head towards me. I did not question her as to the nature of her sin, but the cross that she bore weighed heavy upon her. She pulled her dress, fashioned from a cardinal's robe tighter about her, I'd heard, many years ago, a man was crucified upon that cross. that she had spent weeks carrying him, that they left him there upon her whilst the flesh rotted from his bones. I had dismissed this as just a tale, something to frighten the sinners and scare the children at Mass. That was before I saw the straps that had bound him still wound about her. Then I saw the single eye that had been painted in the centre of the cross, and knew I couldn't bear to hear of the things it had seen...
